Review of Chirp by Ann Everett

Chirp

A woman hiding from her future…..
Heiress to the largest steel company in America, twenty-year-old, socially awkward Blaze Bledsoe hides out at Dessie Bishop’s farm. For the last three years, Blaze has eluded one investigator after another, but just when she thinks she’s safe, a PI closes in. Her luck is about to run out in more ways than one.
A man running from his past….
Rance Keller, a tough, hard-living ex-con, fresh out of prison for a crime he didn’t commit, arrives to claim the house his grandmother left him. Finding a strange girl living there, his plans for a solitary life take a turn. Her lack of modesty, no filter, and word of the day fetish baffles him, but those big green eyes and sweet mouth have him losing sleep.

**My thoughts**
What intrigued me the most about the book and sparked an interest in me was a teaser saying that the main character was a girl who had Asperger's Syndrome. I have been working with this community for almost 20 years and was curious to see if someone could actually pull off the nuances of the population without being cliche and stereotypical, as well as capturing how it could affect a romance. I have to say that I wasn't disappointed at all.

Blaze's quirky nature is simply called being socially awkward throughout the book and the label is never used, which is fine. I had to chuckle at some of her quirks and interpretations of situations because I have seen them in real life. I applauded her for being aware that she interpreted her world differently and for saying as much to others around her and for trying to learn how to navigate in society. I also really liked the peek into her creative mind and processes.

Rance was tougher for me to swallow. He is an ex-con who was wrongfully convicted, but still maintains a tough exterior for protection. He is overcome with attraction for Blaze and wants to protect her, from her past, from society as a whole, and even from himself at times. He can be harsh and does one thing in particular that I don't know if I could forgive him for doing. But he does eventually make up for it all and becomes quite wonderful.

The two of them have a smoldering attraction to each other that takes its time to ignite and grow. If you don't like steamy sex scenes, you'll want to skip this one, or at least fast forward through those parts. (I recommend reading it anyway, and just skipping those pages if you don't like those kinds of scenes.) They go through one heck of a roller coaster ride as they find out more about each other and each other's pasts. Some of their experiences are definitely not an everyday experience for the rest of us, such as being an heiress who has a private detective hot on her trail. But so much of the story felt real to me that I didn't mind suspending a bit of reality. After all, this is fiction, and we want to go to a different world.

There was just so much about this book that I loved that I don't know how to put into words. I hated it when I got interrupted and had to do something else, because I just wanted to sit and read. And I was sad when it ended. I want more of Blaze and Rance!
